What is Sertraline (Zoloft)?
Sertraline is an SSRI antidepressant that works by increasing serotonin levels in the brain. It's one of the most commonly prescribed antidepressants, used for depression, anxiety disorders, PTSD, OCD, and panic disorder. It typically takes 4-6 weeks to feel the full effects.
Selective serotonin reuptake inhibition
Blocks the reabsorption of serotonin in the brain, making more serotonin available. This helps improve mood, reduce anxiety, and regulate emotional responses.
Gradual therapeutic effect
Unlike immediate-acting medications, SSRIs work gradually over several weeks as your brain adapts to increased serotonin levels, providing sustained relief.
Well-established safety profile
Decades of clinical use have established sertraline as a safe, effective first-line treatment with a favorable side effect profile compared to older antidepressants.

Important safety information
Antidepressants carry a boxed warning for increased risk of suicidal thoughts in people under 25, especially in the first weeks of treatment or after a dose change. Seek help right away if mood worsens.
Rarely, combining serotonergic medications can cause serotonin syndrome (agitation, fast heart rate, fever, tremor). Tell your clinician about every medication and supplement you take.
Do not stop suddenly — your clinician will taper the dose to avoid discontinuation symptoms such as dizziness, flu-like feelings, or 'brain zaps.'
